Castelo de Vide
June 2012
The large square with modern and old sculptures is ringed by well-kept houses, public buildings, and businesses. We ate a pleasant lunch at Doces & Companhia, on the back terrace overlooking the verdant countryside.
Castelo de Vide had a thriving Jewish population until the late 15th century, and an old synagogue in the judiaria has been renovated and converted to a museum with permanent and changing exhibits reflective of the history of Jews in Portugal.
Close to the judiaria is the 13th-14th century castle containing a museum of megaliths, Centro de Interpretação do Megalitismo, with artifacts as well as maps of locations of megaliths throughout Portugal.
A lovely town upon a hill
