San Juan Island
and
Orcas Island
The San Juans are peaceful and unhurried. San Juan Island was site of the Pig War, in which the killing of a pig in 1859 sparked a dispute between the English and the Americans encamped on opposite sides of the island. The dispute was settled by negotiation rather than fighting, with the Americans gaining title to these lovely islands. We walked on paths around English Camp and American Camp, and contemplated the sea as we sat for a while looking for orcas off Lime Kiln Point. We did see spouts and tails, and were treated to one breaching orca, too fast to be photographed, but imprinted in our minds.
