Forks is famous for the “Twilight” series of books, though none of us had read the books or seen the films. Forks averages 120 inches of rain each year. Logging was a major industry, though the last two lumber mills were closed as most huge tree logs now go to China for processing. There is still one roofing-shingle mill, which we visited on the Logging and Mill Tour run by a volunteer for the Forks Chamber of Commerce. Later in the day we walked along the Hoh River Trail through the rain forest, seeing a surfeit of moss-covered trees and a couple of hungry elks, too busy eating to care that people were walking right next to them and snapping photos.
