Delaware Bay

We drove to Cape May, Cumberland , and Salem Counties, along the Delaware Bay, principally to flip overturned horseshoe crabs, buffeted by the surf, to their proper positions, enabling them to return to the sea. Our nighttime (from 9 until after 11 PM) group (Dan, Sandy, Ezra, and a family of five), led by a  naturalist from the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, rescued 159 males and 67 females from Thompsons Beach. The horseshoe crabs lay tiny greenish eggs that shorebirds, on their way from South America to the Arctic, feast on. The interplay has proceeded for millennia, though populations of both the birds and the horseshoe crabs have declined. More information is at http://returnthefavornj.org.
