Paterson

December 2012

Displayed are photos from our field trip to Paterson, including lunch at Istanbul Restaurant, formerly Hummus, and now mainly serving pide, the delicious Turkish form of pizza. The chef/owner, from the Turgut family, only spoke Turkish and the menu was also only in Turkish. In the past, his daughters helped in the restaurant and the menu was more extensive (and in English). He has another place, Sofra, in Montclair, with a wider menu, and the Turgut family owns many in Istanbul. At Fattal’s Syrian Bakery we bought halvah, dates, spices, tahini, and a huge bottle of olive oil. At the Nablus Bakery we tasted kanafeh (a hot, sweet, cheese pastry) and bought pistachio, walnut, and date pastries to take home. The Great Falls National Historical Park, designated about a year ago, has yet to be cleared of debris. The falls are majestic and once powered numerous factories, among them textile mills and a locomotive factory. The Paterson Museum contains exhibits of Jacquard looms, a submarine, an engine used in the Spirit of St. Louis, pharmaceutical supplies, and colt revolvers. In the works is an exhibit about the Lenape, including a model of a fishing weir found along the Passaic River in nearby Fair Lawn.
