George Nakashima

May 2012

The New Hope, PA workshop founded by George Nakashima is open to the public by appointment once a month. George’s son, Kevin, and Soomi, the wife of George’s grandson, led the tour. Not only did Nakashima design furniture, he also planned and constructed many of the compound’s buildings. Works by artist and friend Ben Shahn grace the walls, both inside and outside (a mosaic wall). George Nakashima died in 1990, but the workshop continues his designs and philosophy under the direction of his daughter, Mira.

More (and often better) photos of the buildings and furniture are on its website nakashimawoodworker.com.
